History


Euro 2024 is going to be the 17 th Edition of the competition. In the previous 16 editions, we have had 10 different champions with Germany and Spain winning it 3 times, France and Italy winning twice, and the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and Portugal winning it once.

The tournament began in 1960 in France where the Soviet Union defeated Yugoslavia in the final.

The current holders are Italy who got the better of England in the finals after penalties in 2021.

Format


Over the years, the tournament has upgraded to a 24-team tournament with the teams being divided into 6 groups of 4 teams each. Each team faces the other three teams in their group once in the group stages. The top 2 teams from each group and the 4 best third-placed teams qualify for the knockout stages.

The 16 qualified teams face each other in a single elimination match in the round of 16, just like the World Cup knockout stages, and keep progressing forward until they are defeated. The 8 winners make it to the quarter-finals and the 4 teams that emerge victorious play the semifinals. The 2 teams that lose the semifinals play the third-place playoff to secure the third position. The two winning teams play the final of the competition and the winners become the champions of Europe for the next 4 years.

The knockout stage draw is done based on the teams' position in the group stages. The knockout stages are single-elimination games; if a team loses the match in the knockout stage, they are directly out of the competition. There are no second chances.

Venues


Germany was elected as the host nation for the competition on 27 September 2018 in Nyon, Switzerland after they beat the only other competing nation Turkey by 12 votes to 4. The final match will take place in Berlin’s Olympiastadion. The 10 German venues are as follows:-

· Euro is the second most-watched football tournament in the world after the World Cup

· Players claim that winning the Euros is tougher than winning the World Cup because the competition level is higher because better teams are competing in the Euros than in the World Cup.

· This is going to be the last Euro competition for many legends of the game including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and many more superstars
